Parts List

Last Updated on January 28, 2014

The “Parts List” is organized with the quantity and recommend part first e.g. (Quantity) Part Name.  If that part is unavailable or if you prefer to order from a US store, I listed substituted parts, (indicted by Sub: quantity part name) below the recommended part.

Remember, you need to order everything and their quantity in the parts list. You do not need to order the primary part and parts indicted by “Sub:”. “Sub” part should only be ordered when the primary part is unavailable.

Note: HobbyKing have great prices but because the items are shipped from China, orders will take up to 3 weeks for delivery. If you live in the United States and wish to get your parts sooner only order from US suppliers. I marked US supplier next to each parts description.

Cost of this Project
I did not include prices for the parts because prices fluctuate, but the cost of this project for all the items you need to fly, will be around $1000-$1200, $600-$1000.  This price is if you were starting from scratch.  If you have your own radio, batteries, charger, tools, etc. then the price to build Scout will be considerably less.

It would be great if you would give more details on which items are optional. In some sections there are different models of things that do the same job. In the ESC section (by the way, you should say what ESC stands for somewhere since I still have no clue after looking all over your website) you list 2 ESC’s and then a third one which is listed as a substitute. This makes it seem like I have to buy both of the first to products but the third is optional. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that’s necessary.

I think you should try to make these directions a bit more clear for potential builders. Thanks.

Hi i’m planning on building a Scout UAV, i just wanted to know if you can give me a list of “Intelligence” needed if i use the ArduPilot Mega 2.0, posted on the home page of the site. Would it still be the same as the above list but with the 2.0 without the 1.0 or does the controller( ArduPilot Mega – Arduino Compatible UAV Controller w/ ATMega2560) also have to be different? and do any other parts have to be replaced as well? please give me a detailed answer as this is my 1st time building a Quadrocopter or any other R/C device. Thanks in advance.

    • Russell says:

If you were to go with the ArduPilot Mega 2.0, then you will not need the ArduPilot Mega 1.0 Controller and the ArduPilot Mega IMU. Everything else remains the same.

I haven’t updated the build log with the ArduPilot Mega 2.0 because there is still a 4-6 week delay with shipping of the ArduPilot Mega 2.0

You will also need to use “Mission Planner”, instead of “The Configurator” for programming. Mission Planner is actually a lot easier to use with ArduPilot Mega 1.0 and 2.0.

      • Avith says:

So basically all i need is the ArduPilot Mega 2.0, XBee Explorer Dongle, XBee Explorer Regulated, XBee 1mW Wire Antenna – Series 1 (802.15.4) and the “Mission planner” for the intelligence section and everything else stays the same right?

        • Russell says:

That’s Right and everything else remains the same.

          • Avith says:

Thanks for the clarification, i guess i can get to building it as soon as the APM 2.0 is back in stock.

          • Avith says:

Hi, i just went through the comments section of the XBee Explorer Regulated, XBee Explorer Dongle and there seem to be issues with the voltage and current, them being inadequate. Would i too have this problem if i decide to use them with the APM V2?

          • Russell says:

The low power refers to the Xbee Pro 900 mhz transceivers. The Xbee Pro’s require more power than the Explorer can provide. The Xbee’s I recommend are the 2.4GHz transceivers require less power and work just fine with the Explorer. You won’t have any problems with the APM V1 or V2 if you use the Xbee 2.4GHz transceivers that I have listed.

    Thanks

  4. Khanh Nguyen says:

Hello, I wonder if I could use a 11000 mAh LiPo battery and maybe higher voltage motor? I am not sure about the motor and which one to choose, can you give me an insight?

    Thanks,

    • Russell says:

You could use a higher capacity battery. There is a balance though with battery capacity and dead weight. You can’t simply add a capacity and expect longer flight times. There will eventually be a negative effect on flight time due to the batteries weight. First you have to choose the appropriate propeller size to lift the estimate weight of the aircraft. For a 11000 mAh LiPo I would choose a propeller size of 14″ and low pitch of 4.5″. You need a motor that is capable of powering a 14″ propeller and a battery that can power that motor. A quick estimate would be a 14.8 volt LiPo battery and a motor that runs at 14.8 volts and is capable of powering a 14″ propeller.

  5. Brendan says:

In the section with ‘Intelligence (Electronics Guide)’ can I replace the ArduPilot MEGA and ArduPilot MEGA IMU with your ‘Low Cost Arduino Based Auto-Stabilizing System’? Or is that not covering enough of what the ArduPilot MEGA and IMU do? I think there are some features that the ArduPilot do that your ‘Low-Cost’ option don’t. But, what are they, and couldn’t I just get those parts as well and attach them to the ‘Low-Cost’ option?

  6. Josh says:

I am going to buy the Scout 3 Carbon fiber Frame. And I was wondering what I still need from McMaster Nuts and Bolt and Everything else list. Thanks.

    • Russell says:

If you buy the Scout 3 airframe, then you don’t need to anything under “nuts and bolts”. The only thing that the Scout 3 airframe doesn’t come with is heat shrink tubing. The kit comes with all bolts, nuts, washers, foam padding and velcro you will need to assemble the frame.

  7. Kiwi fella says:

is this Scout UAV able to withstand the weight of a go-pro camera mounted?

  8. Roger says:

Ist the WLAN Interface Part of the ArduPilotMega Kit mentioned in the Part List? If Not were to get?

  9. Willian says:

Hi! I’m trying to build a quadcopter using an Arduino. Searching the web I found this website. Quite interesting. But I started to read and became more and more confused. You describes certain items in your “Parts List” but you uses different pieces on your build guide. For example, you uses a Xbee but you didn’t list it. You uses a ArduPilot Mega (the red board) but now, on your shop, there’s only a enclosure board. Can you update your guide? Or make it more clear to understand? But I’m trying to build my quad, so I’ll ask somethings: 1) Can I use the new ArduPilot with a Arduino Uno R3 or I need to use an Arduino Mega? 2) You know other program or firmware that allows me to use Arduino Uno R3 (if I use accelerometers and not pre-made boards)? Thanks for all 😀

    • Russell says:

Yes the build log is becoming out of date. I am currently working on updating the build guide.
      1. An ArduPilot is an Arduino specially designed for an autonomous vehicle. The Arducopter code that I use in the build log only works on an ArduPilot board.
      2. The Aeroquad project allows you to use an Arduino board. Choosing whether to use an UNO or Mega depends on what type of multicopter you are building and how many sensors you will use. If you are building a quadcopter with just gyro and accelerometers than you could use a Arduino UNO.

      • Willian says:

Thanks! I’d already saw the Aeroquad at meantime you answer my comment. But, anyway, thank you very much

  10. Ernie says:

I’m also have simmilar questions I have a pair of XBee S1’s got several UNO’s & a MEGA to play with (eventually will upgrade to XBee Pro, longer range). I want to build my own XBee controller (seen it done on YouTube) wt video display and use Arduino Uno or Mega for the Quadcopter, mabe even upgrade to 6 or 8 later. So what Program should I use for this. You would be greatly helping me & to prove it can be done (Owner of VeryBig local Hobby RC store says it can’t be done), I know it can but not so good writing code as I am with wireing the electronics. You would be a great HELP!

  11. Albert says:

    Hi,

I don’t quiet understand the part with the arms. If I interpret your list correctly you say you need only 1 carbon fiber arm 75cm long. Is that right? I have also look at the assembly instructions and I am not sure if one is supposed to cut that into three pieces to make the arms or what.
So I guess my question is, how long are the scout’s arms? are they 75/2 or 75/4?

    Thanks

  12. Aneesh says:

Hi, can I replace the carbon fibre with aluminium? If yes should I upgrade the motor, propeller or battery to lift the extra weight and get the same flight time?
